Brady Bacon – MOWA Win at Granite City Highlights Strong Weekend!
(Bill W) April 23, 2014 – A big 410 winged win with the Midwest Open Wheel Association at Tri-City Speedway near Granite City, Illinois highlighted the weekend for Brady Bacon. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver bested a solid field there in the Brady Bacon Racing #99 before hopping aboard the Hoffman Racing #69 at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio on Saturday where he scored quick time and a top five finish with USAC.
Friday’s MOWA event drew a tough crowd, including Cristopher Bell in the Keith Kunz sprinter. “We started sixth in the heat,” says Brady. “Christopher started beside me and got the jump on me a little bit. I got a couple of shots at him, late there but I had to settle for third. AJ Bruns, who started up front, won it. We finished one spot out of the Dash, unfortunately.”
Brady would start seventh in the feature, and move his way into the top three quickly. “I had a really good car,” he says. “It took a while to get started. There were a bunch of cautions. Once I got going, I picked some of those guys pretty quick. I don’t know what lap, ten or fifteen, but Christopher dropped out (while leading).”
The winning move was made, but Brady didn’t know it. “I was able to pass AJ for the lead,” he says. “I still thought I was second, because I hadn’t seen Christopher pull off. I was still trying to catch him and there was another car that was about the same color, so I was trying to run him down!”
Brady cruised to the win from there. “The track took some rubber there with about ten to go,” he says. “I was able to get down in it, and we were good. I think we ended up lapping up to seventh. We tried some new things that worked really well. We’d like to build on that.”
It was time to take the wing off and hop in the Hoffman machine for Eldora on Saturday. Brady talked about the track conditions for time trials, in which he was quick time. “It was about normal for qualifying,” he says. “It started getting rough going into the corner on the top in the heat race. They had just watered the track before the heats and it was tough to pass in the first one. I couldn’t quite get by Jerry (Coons Jr.) for the transfer spot, so we finished fifth.”
The finish in the heat put him on the pole of a B main in which he was victorious. “We were able to win the B,” says Brady. “I thought I had seen the checkered, but it was only the white flag, so that added a little excitement to the finish. The car really was good all night.”
Starting in row four for the main event, Brady did work his way into the top five. “The track was the same as far as being rough heading into the corners,” he says. “It actually got a little worse for the feature. We were having to enter in the middle of the corner and slide up. It didn’t give us much of an opportunity to get a run on someone and pass them.”
Riding fifth, Brady wasn’t going to take a chance at tearing things up at the high-banked, high-speed half-mile. “I tried to pass Jerry for fourth a couple times, but we just didn’t have him…and I didn’t want to wad it up at Eldora for an extra $200,” he admits. “Last time, we had a DNF at Eldora with a good car. This time we came out of there with a top five and a quick time, so that was the good side of it.”
Brady is planning on possibly running three races this weekend in Indiana. On Friday, USAC visits the I-69 Speedway in Gas City before the series rolls south to Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt on Saturday. Sunday, he may take the #99 to the Terre Haute Action Track where MSCS visits for a King of Indiana Sprint Series stop.
