Brady Bacon

Haubstadt Hardships

(Bill W) April 23, 2013 – Brady Bacon was just trying to find a race last weekend like everyone else. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma had his first feature win with the World of Outlaws all but won before engine problems sidelined him at the Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt, Indiana in 2012. He returned Saturday night, only to have another good run spoiled in the Brady Bacon Racing #99. He will be back in the Hoffman Racing #69 this weekend in Indiana with USAC. Friday, the series visits the I-69 Speedway in Gas City, while Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville hosts on Saturday.

Finding a place to run last weekend was an adventure in itself. “We were chasing races all weekend,” says Brady. “I was originally running in Paducah at the Outlaw show. That was rained out. I got to Indianapolis by then. I was going to hang out there to see what they were going to do with Eldora. They said they were going to run Eldora for sure. Then I was going to run Attica (OH) on Friday night and they canceled. I woke up Saturday expecting to run Eldora and they canceled. So I got the trailer and we went down to Haubstadt.”

Some early problems complicated things, but Brady rebounded, made it out for his qualifying spot without any hot laps and timed in 11th. “We had some motor issues there that we’ll get resolved this week,” he says. “We had to change a motor before qualifying, so we didn’t get any hot laps. I was pretty pleased with the lap we had for not getting any laps.”

A start on the front of the heat could have set Brady up for the Dash and another run at an Outlaw win at Haubstadt…but it wasn’t to be. “We were probably about two seconds late to the staging area (for his heat),” he says. “We actually sat there for a while before we were pushed off, but they still said we were late. That put us back a row. We had to start fourth then, and that’s where we finished.”

Instead, he would start the feature in row seven. “It was too bad, because we really had a shot at the Dash from the front row,” says Brady. “As it panned out, we started 13th.”

Brady bounced back yet again and charged forward in the main event. He was battling in the top ten and looking for more. “We really had things going good towards the end of the race,” he says. “We were up to seventh and still moving forward. We had a chance to get a couple more cars.”

That’s when another competitor changed the best laid plans again. “Sheldon Haudenschild hit me and spun me out at that point,” says Brady. “I did a 360 and kept going, but by then, I was back in 14th. That was frustrating after the work we put in after our setbacks. To have something like that happen was unfortunate. It looked like it may be a top five, but it definitely wasn’t our night.”

Still, it made Brady confident that his car can compete with the Outlaws in the coming months. Two weekends of USAC National sprint car racing lie ahead with Gas City and Putnamville first up.
