Brady Bacon – North or South, As Long as We’re Racing!

(Bill W) May 5, 2011 – A trip to Minnesota and Iowa topped the master plan for the Brady Bacon Racing #99 last weekend. Foul weather at Jackson Speedway in the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” altered that plan, and Brady headed for the always-exciting Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, Texas on Saturday. Tuesday found the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma native in his home state in Salina racing with the World of Outlaws. This weekend, the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series hopes to kick back into action in West Memphis, Arkansas.

The ASCS-Lone Star region sanctioned Saturday’s show at Cowtown. After drawing inside row three for his heat, Brady came home fourth at the checkers. “We got some new shocks built for a short track like Cowtown to get back where we need to be,” he says. “I think we were good. The heat race was super-heavy and really narrow. We were fourth after the first lap, and everyone stayed where they were at.”

Starting outside row seven, Brady asserted himself immediately. “We had to start in the back, and we were able to pick our way through there pretty well,” he says. “Most of the guys were running the high side, but I mainly ran the bottom in three and four. We were up to second pretty quickly.”

The 2010 ASCS Ronald Laney “Hard Charger of the Year” tailed Gary Taylor the rest of the way home to complete his solid run. “Gary Taylor had a really good car again, and he didn’t make any mistakes,” says Brady. “I got beside him a time or two, but we just didn’t have the car to get by him. The car was good and the changes we made with the shocks were good. I think we’re back on track on the bullrings. We’ll see how it goes this weekend.”

Riverside International Speedway is another tight bulling, and it will play host this weekend. Any laps on a quarter-mile come in handy. “We’re getting closer to having a package just about everywhere we run,” says Brady. “Weeks like this where we can get some laps on a short track really help you for the future.”

The Salina Highbanks is anything but a bullring, but it was close to home for Brady and the World of Outlaws were in town. A problem in time trials thwarted an honest run with the big boys. “We had a hole in the wing slider line, so we didn’t have power steering for qualifying,” he says. “We were tenth quick in hot laps overall. I think we could have been alright with a normal shot at qualifying, and maybe make the heat invert.”

The 24th quick time of the night left Brady scrambling. An eighth place finish in the heat started him eighth in the B. He was able to move forward two spots to grab the final transfer in the A. “As it was, we had to work a little harder to make the show,” he says. “We were actually pretty fast in the B. They retiled the top before the feature, and that made us a little shorthanded up there.”

Brady dropped from the feature early. “I had gotten lapped, and the way their format is…you’re kind of done,” he explains. “We weren’t going to gain spots or money, so we pulled off. We really didn’t have the motor and the tires we needed to be competitive. We were close to home and we made the show, so it was worth it to race close to home.”

The proprietors of Riverside International Speedway are optimistic that they will be racing on Saturday despite the rising Mississippi River. If by chance they have to change plans, you will find Brady back with the ASCS-Lone Star region at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
